Living in Place with Universal Design
Universal Design does not mean a “hospital aesthetic”, it can be quite comfortable and connote “residential warmth w/ safety”. Staying within one’s own home, within one’s own community, results in a longer expected life span and an overall happier life!
Learn what you need to know to design for those who have medical issues, or those who are simply choosing to remain in their homes to “Age In Place”.
You’ll hear how you can apply that knowledge by looking at the issues, breaking them down into design elements, and applying them in spaces and places that help maximize a person’s physical independence and self-reliance. These design elements are to assist the individual, or their caretakers.
There will also be examples of different components that can be used to design for those with medical challenges such as visual issues, dementia, post surgery issues such as knee, hip or spine challenges, as well as general aging challenges.
Universal design definitely does NOT equal boring design!
